1. Before you start: site survey and positioning

The first step is not digging — it is surveying. Confirm the lane width and required clearance (typically 3.5m per lane), check for underground pipes, cables and gas lines with a ground-penetrating survey, and verify the concrete slab thickness where the bollard will sit. A bollard installed on a weak foundation will tear out of the ground under impact regardless of its crash rating.

Mark the exact position: the bollard column should sit in the center of the lane, 300–500mm back from the stop line, with the control cabinet within 30m cable distance. Check power availability (110/220V AC) and whether you need a loop detector or license plate camera for automatic triggering.

2. Excavation: foundation pit dimensions and depth

Foundation requirements vary by bollard model and crash rating. As a general rule: a standard automatic bollard needs a pit of about 1000×1000mm and a depth of 900–1200mm — deeper for crash-rated models (MPS-rated bollards may need 1500mm+ and a reinforced concrete block of 2–4 tonnes).

Never cut corners on depth: the foundation is what transfers impact loads into the ground. The pit walls should be vertical and the bottom level; if the soil is soft or waterlogged, add a gravel bed and compaction, and place a 100mm lean concrete pad before installing the foundation cage.

3. Conduit, drainage and grounding before concrete

Before pouring concrete, lay the cable conduit from the control cabinet to the bollard pit — a 25–50mm PVC or steel conduit for power and signal cables, with a spare conduit for future upgrades. Route conduits below the foundation level so cables cannot be crushed by the concrete block.

Drainage is the most commonly skipped step and the most common cause of failure: a bollard pit collects water, and a flooded pump room or control box kills the unit. Install a drainage channel from the pit to a soakaway or drain, or use a bollard with an integrated drainage design. Add a grounding rod and connect the unit and cabinet to earth per local electrical code.

4. Mounting the bollard and wiring the controls

Once the foundation cage or anchor bolts are set in concrete and cured (usually 3–7 days), place the bollard on the foundation, level it with shims, and torque the anchor bolts to the specified values. Connect the power cable, and if applicable the control signals: push-button, remote control receiver, loop detector and traffic light interface.

Run a function test before backfilling: raise and lower the column several times, check the obstacle detection (the bollard should stop and reverse if it meets resistance), and verify the manual override works — a handle or pump that lets you raise or lower the bollard without power.

5. Backfilling and surface finishing

Backfill the pit around the foundation with clean, compacted material in layers, leaving the bollard column free. Finish the surface with concrete or asphalt flush with the column base, sloping slightly away for drainage. A drainage ring or surface channel around the column prevents water pooling at the base.

Apply the safety markings last: reflective tape on the column (standard on our bollards), yellow/black hazard painting if required, and any signage for drivers. Clean the column and test the full cycle again — lift, hold, lower — with the surface finished.

6. Commissioning, testing and maintenance schedule

Commissioning covers: limit switch adjustment (correct top and bottom positions), pressure/current settings, loop detector sensitivity and integration with your access control system. Run 20+ full cycles under load and verify emergency operations: manual override, fire-department interface and failsafe behavior during power loss.

Maintenance is simple but regular: monthly visual inspection and cleaning, quarterly oil level check (hydraulic models), annual seal and relay check, and immediate attention to any unusual noise or slow lifting.
